    The New River Alliance of Climbing was awarded the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Excellence in Partnership Award during a ceremony held at Summersville Lake on September 7, 2023. The Excellence in Partnerships Award annually recognizes exceptional contributions by a partner supporting the Recreation and/or Environmental Stewardship programs. The award recipient is selected based on accomplishment of management objectives, creativity, improvements in public awareness and education, serving diverse audiences and involvement of other partners.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Huntington District hosted a Ribbon Cutting ceremony on Friday August 25, 2023 to celebrate the completion of a project to renovate the Bradshaw Town Hall in Bradshaw, WV.
  • Senator Capito Staffers Visit Winfield Locks and Dam

    Adam Tomlinson, Murphie Barrett, Brett Jortland, and Libby Callaway from West Virginia Senator Shelley Moore-Capito’s office visited Winfield Locks and Dam and held discussions with Colonel Jayson Putnam and Mike Keathley to gain a better understanding on some of the issues that the district faces with regard to meeting mission requirements.

    Saving Lives is Fun at Burnsville Lake! On Friday, July 28th Burnsville Lake, US Army Corps of Engineers and Bobber the Water Safety hosted a Water Safety Event that was fun and educational for all ages!
  • Bluebird Boxes

    Kids at Lower Twin Campground built their own bluebird boxes and they did an excellent job!!!! This was a learning opportunity that continues when they hang their boxes and get to watch birds move in. Thank you, Ranger Autumn Elliott and Volunteers Scottie and Michelle Owens for making this event great for these kids

    This group of guys are spending their summer before college working for our contractor to remove drift from the lake.
  • Annual Maintenance Bulkhead Exercise

    While conducting the annual maintenance bulkhead exercise, access across Sutton Dam to the Jerimiah Carpenter hiking trail was closed. This important exercise enables staff the opportunity to maintain a state of readiness and to test the various pieces of equipment and steps required to complete the process.

    Ridgeview Elementary Ribbon Cutting

    The Ridgeview Elementary Ribbon Cutting Ceremony took place on June 9 in Clintwood, VA at the new Ridgeview Elementary School. This event celebrated the completion of a Section 202 project that provided flood protection for Dickenson County Schools.

    Who Works the Rivers

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Huntington District participated in RiverWorks Discovery’s “Who Works the River” event in Point Pleasant on April 21st. 
  • Fish Habitat/ Attractors

    Rangers and Maintenance Staff at John W. Flannagan, (JWF), teamed up with the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources to build several fish habitat/ attractors. We were able to place these structures in different parts of the lake, two areas that would be suitable for winter pool and two areas that are suitable for summer pool.
