Fish Habitat/Attractors

Rangers and Maintenance Staff at John W. Flannagan, (JWF), teamed up with the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources to build several fish habitat/ attractors. We were able to place these structures in different parts of the lake, two areas that would be suitable for winter pool and two areas that are suitable for summer pool.

These structures were placed in clusters, (increases density), so it can help the smaller game fish (fry) to grow. It gives them a chance to seek refuge from larger predators. Over time, quicker than one would think, algae and weeds will start to grow in and around the artificial structures. This will help provide the smaller fish that are seeking refuge to have food. Larger predator fish will lurk around these structures, which will allow fishermen/women to catch fish.

We would like to thank the team at PolyPipe, LLC and Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources for partnering with us, by supplying us with the materials to build these structures, and helping enhance the fish population at John W. Flannagan for generations to come.

The materials that were used will be able to hold up and not break down for a long time, which means these structures will continue to help with achieving our goal of bettering our fish population at the lake.
