DETROIT, Mich. -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District, announces additions to its fiscal year 2020 program based on the recently approved work plan. The additional approximately $88 million will be used in 2020 to repair breakwaters, dredge harbors, complete various projects and studies throughout the Great Lakes and fund initial construction for the New Soo Lock project.
The Detroit District’s work plan increase of $88 million includes four dredging projects and several repair, replacement or construction projects. Significant funding will be used to continue construction of the New Soo Lock in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.
The work plan allows for construction, maintenance and operation of key infrastructure projects. This work plan takes the Corps another step closer to getting a new lock at the Soo in the ground, repair structures at a number of ports throughout the lakes.
The work plan came about when Congress appropriated additional funding for ongoing work in the fiscal year 2020 Energy & Water Development and Related Agencies Appropriations Act as contained in the 2020 Further Consolidated Appropriations Act. The Corps developed an allocation plan for high priority work packages based on the criteria established by Congress.
