USACE announces Taylorsville Lake Dam’s 40th Anniversary Event

Louisville District
Published April 17, 2023

The Friends of Taylorsville Lake, in coordination with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Louisville District, invites the public to the 40th anniversary celebration of Taylorsville Lake Dam.

The celebratory event will be held Sunday, May 28, 2023, at the project’s visitor center located at 2825 Overlook Road, Taylorsville, KY 40071.

The festival will begin at noon. Families are invited to enjoy craft booths, food trucks, hiking trails, fossil-dig site, children’s play area, live music, local vendors and more. No outside food, drink or coolers will be allowed. The celebration will conclude with fireworks above the dam starting at dusk.

Admission to the festivities is $20/vehicle if purchased online prior to May 25 and $30/vehicle on the day of the event. Admission passes can be purchased online at www.friendsoftaylorsvillelake.org/dam-celebration. Parking will be available in designated areas, and there will be a shuttle available to and from the festival area.

Construction of Taylorsville Lake’s dam began in 1974 and was completed in 1983. The dam is over four football fields in length and 15 stories high. It is an earth and rock fill structure designed to hold an additional 45 feet of water over seasonal pool as flood storage. In addition to the primary purpose of flood control, the Taylorsville Lake project offers 3,050 acres of water which provide outdoor recreation opportunities, fish and wildlife enhancement, and quality water storage.

The Taylorsville Lake Dam has played a crucial role in reducing the risk of flooding to downstream communities, as well as providing quality recreation to visitors. This is an opportunity to thank the public, employees, volunteers, partnering agencies and local communities for their part in this success.

The celebration is open to the public and will occur rain or shine, except in the case of extreme weather.
