Chickamauga Lock approach wall receives second nose pier delivery

Progress continues on the Chickamauga Lock Replacement Project as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District successfully delivered a second massive nose pier, a key structure that guides vessels into the new lock chamber. The milestone keeps the project on track for contract completion in 2026 and full operation by 2028, with the new lock expected to boost capacity by 80% and improve commercial navigation efficiency on the Tennessee River.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to begin dredging at Holland Harbor

The U.S. Corps of Engineers, Detroit District will start dredging the entrance to Holland Harbor as early as Thursday, April 24 to remove shoaling across the federal channel.  Surveys indicate a shoal formed in the winter months across the entrance to the harbor that could potentially impact commercial dredging if not addressed.

Miter gate installation begins at Chickamauga Lock

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (April 18, 2025) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District, in partnership with Shimmick Construction and Tennessee Valley Authority, recently began erecting massive miter gates for the Chickamauga Lock Replacement Project. This milestone brings the project closer to its goal of enabling both recreational vessels and commercial barges to pass through the new lock chamber, a critical step in modernizing regional infrastructure.

USACE announces upcoming dam maintenance activities at West Fork Lake (Winton Woods Lake)

In coordination with Great Parks, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Louisville District will be conducting dam maintenance activities at West Fork Lake (better known locally as Winton Woods Lake) in Cincinnati, Ohio’s village of Greenhills, which will impact recreation for lake visitors. These activities are scheduled to begin Aug. 1 and last through November 2025.

Barren River Lake climbs to new record high pool

Barren River Lake in Glasgow, Kentucky, has set a record high pool as of today, April 7, 2025. As of 6:00 a.m., Barren River Lake was at 583.6 feet MSL (mean sea level) and utilizing 81 percent of flood storage, and still rising. The previous record was set 36 years ago in March 1989 when the pool reached 583 feet MSL.
