USACE Louisville District to begin releasing water from Buckhorn and Carr Creek lakes today

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Louisville District continues to monitor the dams at Buckhorn Lake, Buckhorn, Kentucky, and Carr Creek Lake, Sassafras, Kentucky, following severe flooding in eastern Kentucky. The Buckhorn and Carr Creek Dams on the Middle Fork and the North Fork, respectively, of the Kentucky River are currently storing water and operating as intended.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers preparing for heavy rainfall and river levels this weekend

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District is monitoring an expected 3 to 5 inches of rainfall across the Cumberland River Basin this weekend, with the heaviest amounts forecasted in the Cheatham Lake and Lake Barkley watersheds. With already saturated ground, most of the rain will run off into rivers and streams, leading to rising water levels. The Cumberland River at Nashville is expected to peak at 36.7 feet early Monday, below minor flood stage, while Clarksville could reach 50 feet, moderate flood stage, Sunday night. The Corps has adjusted dam operations at Wolf Creek, Dale Hollow, Center Hill, and J. Percy Priest to manage runoff and reduce flood risks.

Green River Dam No. 5 removal to resume in July

As previously announced, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Louisville District and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), with support from The Nature Conservancy, will resume work to complete removal of Green River Lock and Dam No. 5 in Kentucky this month. Demolition efforts are scheduled to resume as early as the second week of July depending on appropriate river levels and weather conditions.

USACE FY24 Civil Works Work Plan provides funding to advance Louisville Metro Flood Protection System Reconstruction Project

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Louisville District will receive $5.3 million in federal funding to advance the Louisville Metro Flood Protection System Reconstruction Project. The funds, which were included as part of the Fiscal Year 2024 Work Plan for the Army Civil Works program, will be used to initiate the construction phase of the project.
