Army Corps of Engineers and EPA building critical fish passage in Niagara River

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency are building on the success of a project to help one of the Niagara River and Lake Erie’s most important fish thrive despite decades of manmade impacts to the ecosystem. With funding from the EPA’s Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI), USACE will build a 700-foot-long fish passage at the City of Buffalo’s Freedom Park to help emerald shiners overcome the velocity of the Niagara River and move upstream after spawning, providing a critical food source for larger fish and wildlife, offering sustenance for the local community, and contributing to goals for delisting the Niagara River as an EPA Area of Concern (AOC).

Channel Cleared in Fairport Harbor by Corps of Engineers Dredging

Volunteers needed at Corps of Engineers lakes for National Public Lands Day

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District is enlisting the support of volunteers at its lakes on the Cumberland River and its tributaries in support of the 23rd Annual National Public Lands Day, Sept. 28, 2024. Led by the National Environmental Education Foundation (NEEF) in collaboration with USACE and other federal agencies and volunteer organizations, National Public Lands Day highlights the importance of preserving open spaces for education, recreation, and well-being. It occurs every year on the fourth Saturday of September. This year’s theme is “National Public Lands Day: Together for Tomorrow.”

Record of Decision Published for FUSRAP Guterl Site in Lockport

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District has published the Record of Decision for the Former Guterl Specialty Steel Corporation Site. The 70-acre site, located in Lockport, New York, is being addressed under the authority of the Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program. The record of decision marks the completion of the final step in the federal decision-making process for addressing legacy contamination at the site and describes the final selected remedy to address contaminated buildings, soil and groundwater at the Guterl Site.

Army Civil Works announces invitations to apply for dam safety loans; $763 million in potential federal financing for Michigan

The Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers today announced the first set of proposals being invited to apply for loans under the new Corps Water Infrastructure Financing Program (CWIFP). Two of the invited applicants are in Michigan.

Chamber Lock Operational Option 3 awarded for New Lock at the Soo

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District’s New Lock at the Soo project in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, awards $222.7 million contract Option 3 (Chamber Lock Operational) to Kokosing Alberici Traylor, LLC (KAT) of Westerville, Ohio. The Option 3 award will allow for construction to proceed as required to have a fully functional lock. “Option 3 includes construction of the lock floor, installation of the mechanical and electrical systems, completion of the filling and emptying system, placing soil in between the New Lock and old Davis Lock, and commissioning of the lock chamber,” said Inland Navigation Design Center, New Lock at the Soo Technical Lead Darin White.  With the on-time award of Option 3, the project continues to be on track for completion in 2030.

Critical Repairs and a Clear Channel on the way for Lorain Harbor

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District is investing more than $14 million in breakwater repairs and dredging in Lorain Harbor. Work by USACE and its contractors will ensure safe navigation for commercial and recreational vessels, prevent erosion along Ohio’s Great Lakes shoreline, and maintain the economic viability of the harbor and its historic lighthouse in the local and national economy.
