Is Union City Dam broken? The dry bed reservoir functions just right
The reservoir at Union City Dam during low-pool conditions in Saegertown, Pennsylvania, May 2023. Union City Dam was built in 1971 and is the only “dry” dam among the sixteen flood-control reservoirs operated by the Pittsburgh District, meaning it does not maintain a permanent pool. The dam is self-regulated and does not require staff to operate machinery from a control tower – the dam releases water via a conduit invert and if the pool level eclipses a set elevation, water is automatically released through the dam’s spillway crest.
