Detroit District Receives GreenGov Presidential Award
Detroit District, represented at the awards ceremony by District Engineer Lt. Col. Michael Sellers, Sandra Watson of Detroit District logistics and Gregory Muilenburg of the Great Lakes and Ohio River Division logistics team, was recognized for its Flex Fuel Program, which encourages the district's workforce to use E-85 fuel in its flex -fuel General Services Administration vehicle fleet. The district reduced its gasoline consumption by 30 percent and increased its usage of E-85 fuel from 2 percent to more than 71 percent of the fuel used in flex-fuel vehicles within eight months of initiating the program. In addition, the demand for gasoline for the district’s fleet decreased 20 percent, at the same time as the district was increasing the use of its GSA fleet to save money on temporary duty costs. As part of the program, the team educated other district personnel on fuel usage by providing them fuel maps and logbooks to help them closely monitor their flex fuel usage.
