Corps of Engineers and City of Oswego Celebrate Significant Breakwater Repairs

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District and their partners celebrated the completion of a multi-year repair of Oswego’s West Arrowhead Breakwater and the start of construction on its Outer West Breakwater. Breakwaters protect the Port of Oswego – the first U.S. port of call on the Great Lakes. Its strategic location puts it less than 350 miles from 60 million people and 750 miles from half of the U.S. and Canadian populations. The Port of Oswego is home to 14 companies that utilize the Port for domestic and international operations with a far-reaching economic impact.

First spillway gate removed at Center Hill Dam for replacement

LANCASTER, Tenn. (July 28, 2025) – Work crews at Center Hill Dam removed the first of its massive spillway gates Saturday, a pivotal first step for an ongoing project to replace all eight original tainter gates and lifting equipment that have been in continuous operation since 1948.

First spillway gate removed at Wolf Creek Dam for replacement

JAMESTOWN, Ky. (July 24, 2025) – Work crews at Wolf Creek Dam hit a major milestone yesterday, successfully removing the first of its massive spillway gates. This action signals the modernization of the dam's infrastructure, replacing all 10 original tainter gates and lifting equipment that have been in continuous operation since 1952.

Bell Road over J. Percy Priest Dam closing for inspection

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (July 9, 2025) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District announces Bell Road across J. Percy Priest Dam will temporarily close 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday from July 21, until Aug. 1, 2025. The roadway remains open on the weekend (Saturday and Sunday, July 26-27).

Monitoring and treatment counters the highly aggressive, non-native plant and the severe ecological and economic threats it poses to local waterways and communities, particularly in the Great Lakes Basin.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District, City of Vermilion, and Erie Metroparks celebrated the completion of construction on a multi-year repair of Vermilion Harbor’s West Pier and start of the final phase of repairs of its East Pier. The combined $23 million investment in these projects is critical to safe navigation on the Great Lakes, the local and regional economy, and protection for residents and visitors of Vermilion.

Corps of Engineers to Complete Repairs on Erie North Pier

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District awarded a $2 million contract to Chicago-based Architectural Consulting Group, Inc. on May 27 to repair approximately 500 feet of the Erie North Pier this summer. The repair ensures safe navigation for commercial and recreational vessels in Erie Harbor, the flow of commerce across the Great Lakes, and access for shipments of sand to nourish the beaches of Presque Isle State Park.
