USACE Buffalo District Awards $17.6 Million Contract for Engineered Construction Cap at FUSRAP Seaway Site

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District has awarded a $17.6 million contract to Mark Cerrone, Inc. to install approximately 23-acres of engineered non-permeable caps at the Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program, Seaway Site, Tonawanda, N.Y. Construction of the engineered cap, designed to limit exposure at the site, will occur within areas A, B, and C, and is scheduled to begin no later than spring 2024.

USACE Buffalo District Awards Contract for Balance of Plant & Groundwater Operable Units at Niagara Falls Storage Site

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District is pleased to announce that it has awarded a $40 million contract to Enviro-Fix Solutions LLC for Niagara Falls Storage Site (NFSS) Remedial and Site Services. The first task order was awarded on Aug. 4, 2023 for $11,984,341.90, which includes remediating contaminated media in accordance with the Record of Decision for the Balance of Plan (BOP) and Groundwater Operable Units (OU). This work is being carried out under the Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program (FUSRAP).

REMEDIAL INVESTIGATION REPORT AND PROPOSED PLAN AVAILABLE PUBLIC MEETING TO BE CONDUCTED FOR THE SUPERIOR STEEL SITE

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Buffalo District is pleased to announce the release of the remedial investigation report and the proposed plan for the Superior Steel Site for public comment. The 37-acre industrial property is located at 500 Superior Street, in Scott Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, approximately five miles southwest of downtown Pittsburgh.

10,000 truckloads safely moved from the Luckey FUSRAP site

The 10,000th truck left the Luckey Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program Site, yesterday, loaded with material contaminated with beryllium, radium 226, thorium 230, uranium 234, uranium 238, and lead, making the site cleanup very near 60% complete.

Corps completes CERCLA five-year review at SLDA

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District, in partnership with the Buffalo District, completed a five-year review of the selected remedy for the Shallow Land Disposal Area (SLDA) Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program (FUSRAP) site per the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA).

Tonawanda Landfill Vicinity Property Site Closeout Report Available

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Buffalo District has completed the Site Closeout Report for the Tonawanda Landfill Vicinity Property, Town of Tonawanda, New York. It is available in the Reports section of the project website at: http://www.lrb.usace.army.mil/Missions/HTRW/FUSRAP/Tonawanda-Landfill/. The report provides a consolidated record of all removal and remedial activities conducted at the Tonawanda Landfill Vicinity Property and documents compliance with all regulations and requirements. The site is a vicinity property of the Linde FUSRAP Site, also located in Tonawanda, New York. Prepared under the Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program (FUSRAP), this report indicates the completion of response actions at the vicinity property in accordance with the 2008 record of decision for the Mudflats Operable Unit (OU) and the 2017 record of decision for the Landfill OU.

USACE FUSRAP Team Completes First Seaway Site Five-Year Review of Selected Remedy

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District completed performing the first five-year review of the protectiveness of the selected remedy outlined in the 2009 record of decision for the Seaway Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program (FUSRAP) Site, located within the 100-acre Seaway Industrial Park along River Road in the Town of Tonawanda, New York. The selected remedy, Containment with Limited Off-site Disposal, requires the capping of Seaway Areas A, B, and C within the landfill boundaries. The cap for the FUSRAP-related material (soil contaminated with radium, thorium, uranium, and uranium daughter products) will be constructed of multiple layers of various types of soil, fabric, and geomembranes at least 4.5-feet thick. Long-term monitoring of FUSRAP-related materials in capped areas, surveillance, and maintenance will be performed by the federal government. The federal government will ensure that land-use controls are in place to prevent future access to and disturbance of the contained FUSRAP-related materials.

Record of Decision released for the former Harshaw Chemical Company FUSRAP site

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District, has released the Record of Decision for Operable Unit (OU) 1 and OU-2, Former Harshaw Chemical Company Site. The 55-acre former Harshaw Chemical Company Site, which is located at 1000 Harvard Avenue in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, is being addressed under the Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program (FUSRAP).
