NR 22-09: Cordell Hull Lake closes swim beaches

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (April 19, 2022) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District announces the immediate closure of Defeated Creek Day Use Swim Beach in Carthage, Tennessee, as well as Roaring River Swim Beach in Gainesboro, Tennessee, at Cordell Hull Lake. These closures are due to high bacteria levels in the water, presumably attributed to low lake levels, recent heavy rain, and runoff from adjacent farms.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers awards contract to dredge Buffalo Harbor

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Buffalo District awarded a $991,500 contract to Michigan-based Ryba Marine Construction Company on April 1 to conduct dredging of the federal navigation channel in Buffalo Harbor. Dredging of harbors like Buffalo’s ensures accessible depths for large vessels, the continued flow of commodities across the Great Lakes, and the economic viability of United States waterways.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers awards contract for critical repairs to Rochester Harbor East Pier

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Buffalo District awarded a $3.85 million contract to Illinois-based Great Lakes Dock and Materials, L.L.C. on March 31 for repairs to the Rochester Harbor East Pier in Rochester, New York. Repairs will ensure the pier, along with its adjacent federal navigation channel, continue to provide safe passage and refuge for commercial and recreational vessels between the Genesee River, Lake Ontario and the rest of the Great Lakes.

New Lock at the Soo to host hybrid public meeting for Hydro Plant tail race closing

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich.- U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District will host a hybrid public meeting 7 p.m., April 20, 2022, to talk about the need for closing the Soo Locks Hydro Plant tail race. The Detroit District needs to close the Hydro Plant tail race for upcoming New Lock at the Soo construction and permanently close a portion of the tail race for safety reasons. The Corps of Engineers wants to hear from anglers and concerned stakeholders before making any official decisions. The tail race is and has been a very popular community fishing spot. The Corps of Engineers goal during New Lock at the Soo construction is to have minimal effects to the community. Participants can attend in-person or virtually.

President’s Budget supplies $117.2 million for Corps of Engineers Detroit District Operation, Maintenance

DETROIT- The President’s Budget for fiscal year 2023 includes more than $6.6 billion in discretionary funding for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Civil Works program, with just over $117.2 million set aside for Detroit District projects. Of great regional significance is an additional $600,000 for the Great Lakes Coastal Resiliency Study, a project that includes the three Great Lakes districts: Detroit, Buffalo and Chicago. The goal is to create a plan identifying vulnerable coastal areas and recommending actions to bolster the coastal resources’ ability to withstand, recover from and adapt to future hydrologic uncertainty with respect to built and natural coastal environments. Recent high-water events across the Great Lakes brought about the study’s need.

Engineers Day 2022 will allow visitors across locks

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich., - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are planning the 2022 Soo Locks Engineers Day with visitors allowed across the locks, the first since before the COVID-19 Pandemic. Visitors are welcome into the Soo Locks facility and across the locks 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Friday, June 24. “Visitors are welcome to cross the gates, but the buildings will remain closed,” Area Engineer Kevin Sprague said. Since 1975, the Soo Locks have been hosting Engineers Day, traditionally held the last Friday in June to honor the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ June 16, 1775 birthday.

USACE awards contract for critical repairs to Little Sodus West Pier on Lake Ontario

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Buffalo District awarded a $3.3 million contract to Rochester-based Crane-Hogan Structural Systems on March 22 for critical repairs to the west pier of Little Sodus Bay in Fair Haven, New York. The west pier suffered degradation and damage in recent years. Repairs will ensure the pier, along with its adjacent federal navigation channel, continue to provide safe passage and refuge for commercial fishermen and recreational boaters between Little Sodus Bay, Lake Ontario and the rest of the Great Lakes.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Awards Contract to Dredge Ashtabula Harbor and Help Create New Wetland Ecosystem

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Buffalo District awarded a $737,000 contract to Toledo, Ohio-based Geo. Gradel Company on March 2 to conduct dredging of the federal navigation channel in Ashtabula Harbor. Material dredged from the harbor will be placed in USACE’s beneficial use project in Ashtabula’s outer harbor, leading to the creation of seven acres of new wetland habitat for plant and animal life in Lake Erie.
