Corps of Engineers receiving new crane barge for St. Marys River

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich., - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District in concert with the Philadelphia District and the Marine Design Center awards a contract to Southwest Shipyard LP of Houston, Texas in the amount of $11.4 million for a new crane barge on the St. Marys River. “The new crane barge will perform critical lock and hydropower facility maintenance at the Soo Project Office (Soo Locks),” said Justin Proulx, Chief of the St. Marys River Section. “Additionally, the new vessel will support channel maintenance and will be ready to respond to critical maritime incidents on the St Marys River, such as vessel groundings and anchor drags.” The final design, construction, testing and delivery of the Detroit District’s new crane barge are all part of the awarded contract. Southwest Shipyards is a small business and operates four shipyards along the Texas Gulf Coast. Southwest Shipyards intends to construct the new crane barge at their Brady Island shipyard with delivery expected in Fall of 2024.

Blasting at Louisville VA Medical Center construction site remains halted

In response to Tuesday’s blasting incident that took place on the site of the Louisville VA Medical Center, three independent investigations have begun to ascertain the cause or causes that led to the fragments of rock and sediment being dispersed along I-264, “Watterson Expressway,” and onto adjacent properties causing damage. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the prime contractor, Walsh-Turner Joint Venture, and the Kentucky Department of Mines and Minerals are conducting these investigations.

President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law will invest more than $845 million in U.S. Army Corps of Engineers studies, projects, and programs

Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works announced additional U.S. Army Corps of Engineers studies, projects, and programs funded by President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. These actions will invest more than $845 million to address urgent issues facing Americans, including supply chain resilience, flood mitigation, and costal storm damage protection. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Chicago District will receive a portion of those funds totaling around $3.45 million to assist in the completion of several projects across the Great Lakes, specifically the Lake Michigan shorelines of Illinois and Indiana.

Blasting suspended at Louisville VA Medical Center construction site in interest of public safety

In the interest of public safety, blasting on the site of the Louisville VA Medical Center has been suspended indefinitely following an unforeseen incident at the construction site today. During the blasting as part of earthwork on the site, fragments of sediment and rock landed on I-264, “Watterson Expressway,” and onto adjacent properties causing damage. There were no injuries reported and local law enforcement responded.
