The most recent appropriations for the Department of War expired at 11:59 p.m. EST on September 30, 2025. Military personnel will continue in a normal duty status without pay until such time as a continuing resolution or appropriations are passed by Congress and signed into law. Civilian personnel not engaged in exempted or excepted activities will be placed in a non-work, non-pay status.

  • Chamber Lock Operational Option 3 awarded for New Lock at the Soo

    U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District’s New Lock at the Soo project in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, awards $222.7 million contract Option 3 (Chamber Lock Operational) to Kokosing Alberici Traylor, LLC (KAT) of Westerville, Ohio. The Option 3 award will allow for construction to proceed as required to have a fully functional lock. “Option 3 includes construction of the lock floor, installation of the mechanical and electrical systems, completion of the filling and emptying system, placing soil in between the New Lock and old Davis Lock, and commissioning of the lock chamber,” said Inland Navigation Design Center, New Lock at the Soo Technical Lead Darin White.  With the on-time award of Option 3, the project continues to be on track for completion in 2030.

  • Critical Repairs and a Clear Channel on the way for Lorain Harbor

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District is investing more than $14 million in breakwater repairs and dredging in Lorain Harbor. Work by USACE and its contractors will ensure safe navigation for commercial and recreational vessels, prevent erosion along Ohio’s Great Lakes shoreline, and maintain the economic viability of the harbor and its historic lighthouse in the local and national economy.

  • Dredging on the Way for Barcelona Harbor

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District awarded a $1.5 million contract to Michigan-based Ryba Marine Construction Co. on Sep. 4 to conduct dredging of the federal navigation channel in Barcelona Harbor. Dredging of harbors like Barcelona ensures accessible depths for vessels traveling the Great Lakes and enables recreational boating which supports more than $1.6 million in business revenue and labor income to the transportation sector.

  • Corps of Engineers monitoring Hurricane Francine approaching Cumberland River Basin

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District is actively monitoring the remnants of Hurricane Francine, which are expected to move through the Cumberland River Basin starting tomorrow, Sept. 12, and continuing through Sunday, Sept. 15.

  • USACE opens navigation channel at Monongahela River Locks and Dam 3

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District opened a 100-foot-wide navigation channel for commercial vessels through the center of the dam at Monongahela River Locks and Dam 3 near Elizabeth, Pennsylvania, Thursday, Sept. 5. The first commercial navigation vessel passed through the channel this morning.

  • USACE Louisville District Regulatory Division to host community listening session

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Louisville District will host an informational community listening session on Wednesday, Oct. 2 from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. (EDT) at the McAlpine Locks and Dam Training Center located at 2700 Marine St., Louisville, KY 40212. All partners, stakeholders and the public are invited to attend to learn more about the USACE Regulatory Program.

  • Corps of Engineers emphasizes water safety for Labor Day holiday

    As summer winds down, many Americans will take to the water for the long Labor Day weekend for some end-of-season fun in the sun. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District wants to remind visitors to its lakes and recreation areas throughout the Cumberland River Basin to practice safety around open water.

  • USACE and NYSDEC issue Tropical Storm Debby Emergency general permit

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo and New York Districts and New York State Department of Environmental Conservation have activated the joint permit New York State Programmatic General Permit (NYSPGP-1) for select counties impacted by Tropical Storm Debby, August 9-10, 2024. NYSPGP-1 permit offers one application for the purpose of complying with both agencies’ authorities over rivers, streams, lakes, ponds, and wetlands, and ensures that environmental approvals necessary for response to widespread storm events are expedited. When activated following major storm events, NYSPGP-1 authorizes activities to facilitate the recovery and restoration of damaged properties, projects, aquatic resources, and infrastructure.

  • U.S. Army Corps of Engineers removes WWII era gates hidden in St. Marys River

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District, removed a spare set of miter gates, constructed for the Davis and Sabin Locks, from the St. Marys River this summer. The miter gates were hidden in the river for over 80 years and weighed about 350,000 pounds each. The gates were strategically stored downriver of the Soo Locks facility and out of the federal navigation channel in the 1940s during World War II. The purpose of storing the gates downriver was to have a spare set of replacement gates for either lock if the installed gates were damaged. “The Davis and Sabin locks were built in 1914 and 1919 and at the time were the largest locks in the world,” said Chief Park Ranger Michelle Briggs.

  • Moody Recreation Area temporarily closing for improvements

    CELINA, Tenn. (Aug. 21, 2024) — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District announces that Moody Recreation Area, to include its boat ramp on the Obey River below Dale Hollow Dam, is temporarily closing Sept. 9, 2024, for improvements.
