    Nashville District tames Cumberland River with the 'Old Locks'

    NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Feb. 14, 2018) – Using wood coffer dams, primitive hand tools, A-frames and even animals to haul in supplies and stone blocks on tracks from nearby rock quarries, Army engineers constructed 15 navigation locks in the late 1800s and early 1900s to tame the Cumberland River for steamboats moving people and commerce throughout the region a century ago.

    Judge Shea Nickell, Kentucky Court of Appeals, presents a framed historical portrait of Vice President Alben Barkley, the namesake of Barkley Dam, to Mike Looney, Lake Barkley Resource manager, to be hung in the lake’s visitor’s center where it can be seen by future generations in memory of the vice president. The judge made the presentation during the 50th anniversary commemoration ceremony Aug. 20, 2016 at the Badgett Playhouse Theater in Grand Rivers, Ky.

    Barkley Dam brought hope to region 50 years ago

    GRAND RIVERS, Ky. (Aug. 20, 2016) – Barkley Dam, a symbol of progress in western Kentucky, turned 50 today with fanfare, remembrances and special tributes during a commemoration ceremony at the Badgett Playhouse Theater and reception at the community center.

    Patty Coffey, deputy chief of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District Operations Division, holds a photo in her office Dec. 8, 2014 of her hydrating a young American Bald Eagle at Dale Hollow Lake July 27, 1989 as part of the Eagle Restoration Project. Coffey, a wildlife biologist, served as the project manager for the program that transported 18 eaglets in July 1989 from Wisconsin and Alaska to Tennessee to reestablish the American Bald Eagle to the upper Cumberland region. Twelve eaglets were bound for the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency to place at Chickamauga Lake, although one died during the trip, and six were resettled at Dale Hollow Lake. A total of 44 eaglets were resettled at Dale Hollow Lake between 1987 and 1991.

    Restoring American Bald Eagle to upper Cumberland region a tall tale

    NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Dec. 22, 2014) – Nurturing baby American Bald Eagles in a man-made crib atop a 23-foot tower seems like a tall tale, but that is exactly how biologists carried out a conservation plan in the late 1980s to restore the nation’s symbol to the upper Cumberland region.

    Jesse James stole Corps payroll 130 years ago today

    If direct deposit had existed 130 years ago today, history could have been changed. That’s when famed outlaw Jesse James robbed the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers payroll being delivered by horseback just two-miles shy of reaching employees at Blue Water Camp in Alabama.
