    Headwaters Highlights: Youghiogheny River Lake team wins national partnership award

    From patrolling the waters during the annual Fourth of July boat night parade to installing fish habitats alongside Boy Scout groups, park rangers and staff at the Youghiogheny River Lake are constantly working with partners, volunteers, and state agencies to improve recreational opportunities for the public.

    Union City Dam Road Closure

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District will temporarily close Middleton Road at Union City Dam to perform various maintenance work during May. The road is the entrance to the dam at 1438 Middleton Road, Waterford, Pennsylvania.

    In January 2002, Section 8143 of Public Law 107-117 directed the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to cleanup radioactive waste at the Parks Township Shallow Land Disposal Area (SLDA) site under the Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program (FUSRAP). The cleanup will follow the remediation process outlined in the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) and is consistent with the requirements of the July 5, 2001 Memorandum of Understanding between the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for coordination of cleanup and decommissioning of FUSRAP sites with NRC-licensed facilities.

    Corps increases operational activity at Shallow Land Disposal Area

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Pittsburgh District announces an increase in operational activity at the Shallow Land Disposal Area (SLDA) in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania. During the next few months, residents near the SLDA site will see increased site workers, equipment, signage and maintenance. In addition, site workers will perform infrastructure maintenance such as repairing fencing and drainage ways, clearing trees and brush from between the fences, and removing aged solar panels.

    Pittsburgh’s got grit, but Army Corps signs partnership agreement to help filter out the muck

    To combat the grit problem in the sewer systems, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District signed a partnership agreement with the Allegheny County Sanitary Authority (ALCOSAN), which will construct a grit chamber along Spring Garden Run, a neighborhood located in the northern area of Pittsburgh.
