    Nashville District Distinguished Civilian Award honors Jeff Ross

    NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Dec. 2, 2025) – Retiree Jeff Ross, who culminated a lengthy career as a regional technical specialist in support of the regional fleet within the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Great Lakes and Ohio River Division before retiring in 2022, received the Distinguished Civilian Award yesterday, highlighting exceptional achievements with the Nashville District.

    Wilson, Pickwick Lock teams receive Hedgehog Award for repair actions

    NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Nov. 13, 2025) – Employees that supported back-to-back critical repair actions this past year at Wilson and Pickwick Locks received the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District’s Hedgehog Award yesterday in recognition of their efforts to keep navigation moving on the Tennessee River.

    Rare historic footage surfaces of 1961 Wheeler Lock collapse

    ROGERSVILLE, Ala. (Sept. 15, 2025) – A forgotten piece of motion picture history recently surfaced from a retired U.S. Army Corps of Engineers operations manager for the Tennessee River. Jim Davis, who served in the Nashville District from 1968 to 2014, discovered an old Kodachrome movie in his family’s possession containing unseen footage of the wall collapse at Wheeler Lock in 1961.

    NASHVILLE, Tenn. (June 3, 2025) – The steady flow of the Cumberland River is intertwined with the story of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. As the Army and USACE mark a quarter-millennium of service this month, it’s fitting to highlight the Nashville District’s enduring legacy in shaping the landscape of the region, reducing flood risk, powering communities, establishing navigation, promoting safe recreation, and stewarding natural resources.

    Lockport Lock Reopens After Temporary Repairs: Permanent Fix Scheduled for Fall

    Lockport Lock reopened Friday, April 4th, after undergoing a temporary closure for construction and repairs. The lock had been closed since January 28th for maintenance repairs and upper gate lift replacement. It was expected to reopen at the end of March, but severe cracking was found on the lower miter gates. Temporary repairs were made while parts are being manufactured for the permanent replacement.

    Congressman responsible for improving water resources infrastructure visits locks

    NASHVILLE, Tenn. (April 1, 2025) – Whether or not the Corps of Engineers constructs a brand-new navigation lock or operates and maintains one well into its designed lifespan, these critical infrastructure projects require significant appropriations and receive a great deal of Congressional interest and oversight.

    The dredging contract consists of two dredging crews that have been working six days a week since September. The crews have removed more than 314 barges of material so far, equivalent to 166,000 tons of soil, rocks and debris from the river bottom.

    Transporting commodities on the waterways is four times less expensive than by truck and 33 percent cheaper than by rail. Between 15 million and 20 million tons of cargo travel on the upper Ohio River each year, including mainly coal, but also coke, petroleum products, raw and finished steel, and aggregates.
