    Critical design achievement keeps flood risk management project on track

    NASHVILLE, Tenn. (June 13, 2023) – Civil Engineer Brandon Whitley recently made a critical design update that resulted in keeping the Mouse Creek Flood Risk Management Project on track in Cleveland, Tennessee. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District recognized his achievement by selecting him as employee of the month for April 2023.

    CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (June 2, 2023) – Michael Wilkinson is a safety specialist and quiet professional focused on teaching and ensuring the contractor makes things safe for about 500 construction workers at the Chickamauga Lock Replacement Project.

    Chickamauga Lock Replacement Project reaches monolithic milestone

    CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (May 23, 2023) – Construction of a new navigation lock on the Tennessee River reached a monolithic milestone yesterday as crews and officials held a topping-off ceremony to mark the completion of the first concrete monolith.

    Officials break ground on K-25 Viewing Platform

    OAK RIDGE, Tenn. (May 11, 2023) – Officials broke ground today on a building that will provide a historic lookout over the footprint where the K-25 Building once stood and the Oak Ridge Diffusion Plant produced uranium during World War II as part of the Manhattan Project. Dignitaries welcomed guests, made speeches, and shoveled dirt to officially kick off construction of the K-25 Viewing Platform at East Tennessee Technology Park.

    USACE completes maintenance complex for Army Field Support Battalion at Fort Campbell

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers delivered a 117,034 square-foot maintenance complex to the Army Field Support Battalion during a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, March 15, 2023. The project, with a programmed amount of $44.7 million, consisted of the construction of four general purpose maintenance facilities that includes an allied shop building, engine auto shop, production control building and a paint booth building. The project also included 42,110 square feet of concrete parking.

    Former co-op student now leads District’s current largest project

    Louisville, Ky. – With hard work and perseverance, anything is possible, just ask Tara O’Leary. Little did she know that when she started working for the Louisville District in 1996 that she would one day be leading the team on one of its mega-projects. O’Leary, who is now the Deputy Chief of the Veterans Affairs Division and Louisville VAMC project manager, started her journey with the district as a co-op student while attending the University of Louisville to study engineering.

    Stormwater management key to successful construction

    Thousands of things must be considered and planned for in the construction of a complex facility like a new hospital and the multiple support facilities they require. Of course, many of the decisions involved are essential to guaranteeing the new facility can provide the best quality care for patients – ensuring their health for years to come. One consideration that may not come to mind to the average person for such a facility is how to preserve the environment underneath and around the new construction. This includes the construction of a rainwater drainage system so as not to disrupt the way water moves after large amounts of rainwater accumulate from storms.

    Lock operators work super safely near mega construction projects

    NASHVILLE, Tenn. (March 8, 2023) – Operators at navigation locks could easily wear capes for the super work they do to ensure the safety of the public, not to mention employees that maintain these projects in the Cumberland and Tennessee River systems. At Kentucky Lock in Grand Rivers, Kentucky, and Chickamauga Lock in Chattanooga, Tennessee, ongoing mega construction projects to build larger new locks pose additional hazards for these vigilant protectors of people and resources.
