    Bobby Bartlett lauded for half century of stewardship at Dale Hollow Lake

    CELINA, Tenn. (Dec. 12, 2024) – Park Ranger Bobby Bartlett attended both the 50th and 75th anniversaries of Dale Hollow Dam and has been a steward of Dale Hollow Lake for half a century. He is somewhat of a legend in U.S. Army Corps of Engineers circles and in local communities for his water safety and public outreach work and as a caretaker of the lake and its recreation areas.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Great Lakes and Ohio River Division (LRD) hosted Industry Day on Wednesday, December 4, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. EST at the Hilton Netherland Plaza Hotel in Cincinnati, Ohio. Over 300 members from different industry sectors attended as they learned about USACE LRD’s regional mission, upcoming opportunities, and network with USACE employees across seven regional districts.

    The Pittsburgh District mitigates flood damages throughout its 26,000 square foot region with a network of 16 strategically placed reservoirs that capture storm runoff and reduce downstream risks. The system of reservoirs has prevented $48 billion in damages since their construction began after the 1936 St. Patrick’s Day Flood. The district monitors water levels year-round, adjusts dam operations during storms, collaborates with local, state, and federal agencies, and provides technical and disaster recovery assistance to improve community resilience against future storms.

    On November 14, 2024, cadets from the Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering (CME) at the United States Military Academy visited the USACE Great Lakes and Ohio River Division (LRD) Headquarters in Cincinnati, Ohio. They attended informational sessions led by LRD leadership and staff, received mentorship from LRD Division Commander Maj. Gen. Mark C. Quander, reviewed LRD missions and projects, and gained critical advice and insights for their own senior capstone projects.

    NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Nov. 22, 2024) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers team documenting flood information in the wake of Hurricane Helene has culminated surveys in Tennessee and Virginia and has shifted its efforts to North Carolina.

    Civil engineer tackles lift station design, garners employee of the month

    NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Nov. 21, 2024) – Nate Brock, civil engineer in the Civil Site and Survey Section, and Geotechnics Branch, recently designed a wastewater lift station for the Chickamauga Lock Replacement Project, a task that resulted in recognition as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District Employee of the Month for September 2024.

    Deputy Commanding General for Civil Works visits key Nashville District projects

    Maj. Gen. Jason Kelly, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers deputy commanding general for civil and emergency operations, visited the USACE Nashville District Nov. 13-15 to meet with leadership and employees, see district projects firsthand, and understand the challenges in the Cumberland and Tennessee River basins.

    Prepared, Responsive, and Ready: Nashville District's Emergency Management team takes action in Hurricane Helene response

    In response to Hurricane Helene, which struck Eastern Tennessee on September 26, 2024, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District’s Emergency Management (EM) team sprang into action. After the presidential disaster declaration on October 2, 2024, FEMA activated the Nashville District to assist with water and wastewater management and debris removal. The team quickly deployed specialized personnel to assess the hardest-hit areas, ensuring the continuity of essential services and supporting safe debris removal with local National Guard units. Throughout the mission, effective communication, coordination, and logistical support were key to the team's success.
