USACE awards Brandon Road Interbasin Project design services

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers awarded a Single Award Task Order Contract (SATOC) to obtain critical design, engineering, and analytical services to advance the Brandon Road Interbasin Project (BRIP). Black & Veatch-Stantec BRIP JV, of Overland Park, Kansas, was awarded the contract on April 23, for architect-engineer services to support the project.

Corps of Engineers begins channel improvements in Manistee

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District began significant maintenance to the Manistee Harbor federal channel Thursday, April 16. The Corps of Engineers will place about 3,000 tons of stone to reduce wave energy and overtopping, as well as install new timber fenders along 1,800 feet of the North Revetment, near the U.S. Coast Guard Station Manistee. The work is expected to take about two months.

USACE awards second contract for Brandon Road Interbasin Project

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) awarded the second contract for the Brandon Road Interbasin Project on April 11. The $113.8 million contract will complete the remainder of the project’s Increment I. The Brandon Road Interbasin Project is a complex ecosystem restoration project with innovative technological deterrents, designed to prevent invasive carp and other aquatic nuisance species from moving upstream into the Great Lakes while minimizing impacts to Illinois Waterway users. The project will be largely implemented within the downstream approach channel to the Brandon Road Lock & Dam in Joliet, Ill.

Soo Locks closing for seasonal repair, maintenance

The Soo Locks in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan will close to all marine traffic beginning 11:59 p.m. January 15, or until commercial traffic ceases, through 12:01 a.m. March 25 to perform seasonal critical maintenance. Federal regulation (33 CFR 207.440) establishes the operating season based on the feasibility of vessels operating during typical Great Lakes ice conditions.

Detroit District accepting entries for annual photo contest

The Detroit District invites the public to enter its 10th annual photo contest highlighting U.S. Army Corps of Engineers sites across the Great Lakes. The top 12 photographs highlighting Detroit District projects on the Great Lakes, such as the Soo Locks, Duluth Ship Canal, piers, breakwaters or federal harbors and channels will earn a spot in the 2026 downloadable calendar. The entry deadline is 11:59 p.m. November 23, with winners determined by public voting on Facebook. The Soo Locks Visitors Center Association will award the top three photographers a plaque featuring their winning photo.

Corps of Engineers dredging St. Joseph Harbor starting May 13

The U.S. Corps of Engineers, Detroit District will start dredging outer St. Joseph Harbor on May 13 to keep the federal channel open. The purpose of dredging is to remove shoaling and to perform preventative maintenance at the harbor mouth to avoid interruptions to the commercial shipping season

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to begin dredging at Holland Harbor

The U.S. Corps of Engineers, Detroit District will start dredging the entrance to Holland Harbor as early as Thursday, April 24 to remove shoaling across the federal channel.  Surveys indicate a shoal formed in the winter months across the entrance to the harbor that could potentially impact commercial dredging if not addressed.

The top 12 photographs highlighting Detroit District projects on the Great Lakes such as the Soo Locks, Duluth Ship Canal, piers, breakwaters or federal harbors and channels will earn a spot in the 2025 downloadable calendar. The entry deadline is 11:59 p.m. July 31, with winners determined by public voting on social media. The Soo Locks Visitors Center Association will award the top three photographers a plaque featuring their winning photo. “The Detroit District is proud to continue this annual tradition,” said District Commander Lt. Col. Wallace Bandeff. “The photo contest captures the beauty of the Great Lakes and allows us to see projects that we've designed, built and now, maintain from a whole new perspective.”

Charlevoix channel dredging scheduled to conclude by May 15

About 13,000 cubic yards of material is scheduled to be removed from the Charlevoix Harbor channel before May 15, as part of a maintenance dredging contract under the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District.  Great Lakes Dock and Materials, LLC., located in Muskegon, will perform the work for the Corps of Engineers for approximately $480,000 and place the dredged materials in open water in Lake Michigan. The state-approved open water is located about a mile and a half northwest of the harbor entrance.
