USACE Ready to Deliver Critical Repairs to Oswego Harbor Outer West Breakwater

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Buffalo District awarded a $9.1 million contract to Michigan-based Great Lakes Dock and materials for repairs to the Oswego Harbor outer west breakwater, with plans to start this spring. The breakwater foundation has been significantly damaged by storms, wave action, and deterioration for more than 90 years. Repairs will ensure continued safe navigation for commercial and recreational vessels between Lake Ontario and the rest of the Great Lakes, directly contributing to the nation’s economy.

High winds, storms, wave action increase hazards

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District, urges caution around Great Lakes harbor piers and breakwaters, particularly during high wind and wave events. Accidents can occur near harbor structures during turbulent weather late in the year. The lakeshore attracts residents and visitors who may not be aware of the powerful impacts strong winds and storms can bring to shorelines and harbor structures. “Although breakwater structures are built for navigation, they are often used for recreation,” said Chief of Operations and Maintenance Branch, Cindy Jarema. “Walking along breakwater structures can be hazardous – surfaces may be slippery and uneven, and wave action increases the risk of injury or falling into the water.”

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Buffalo District completes significant repair of Buffalo North Breakwater

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Buffalo District and its contractor, Michigan-based Ryba Marine Construction Co., have completed repairs to the section of the Buffalo North Breakwater breached by a severe storm in October 2019. The storm caused extensive damage to the approximately 2,200-foot breakwater structure, including the 300-foot breach in the north end. Fixing its crest and slopes using a rubble mound armor stone overlay, the breach was repaired in less than two months.

USACE Buffalo District to repair portions of the Buffalo North Breakwater

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District has awarded a $7.8 million contract to Ryba Marine Construction Co. for the repair of 750 feet of the north end of the Buffalo North Breakwater using rubble mound repair to the lakeside of the structure, with construction to start by mid-summer.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to resume Great Sodus, Charles Point Repairs

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Buffalo District and its contractor Michigan-based Great Lakes Dock & Materials, L.L.C will resume repairs the first week of April 2021 to the east breakwater in Great Sodus Harbor, located in Sodus Bay, Village of Sodus Point, Wayne County, NY.
