Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center transitions to holiday, winter schedule

DULUTH, Minn., – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is transitioning the operating hours of the Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center in Canal Park to its holiday and winter schedule. The Detroit District’s Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center winter schedule will begin the week of Jan. 16, 2023, and will be open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

MacArthur Lock closing for seasonal repair, maintenance

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich., - The Soo Locks’ MacArthur Lock will close to marine traffic 7:00 a.m. Dec. 17, 2022, through 12:01 a.m. April 24, 2023, to perform critical maintenance. The Poe Lock will remain open until 11:59 p.m. Jan. 15, 2023, or until commercial traffic ceases, whichever occurs first. The operating season is fixed by federal regulation and is driven in part by vessel operability in typical ice conditions.  “The 800-foot-long MacArthur Lock, built in 1943, is 79 years old; the maintenance period is critical to keeping the lock in operation during the shipping season,” Maintenance Branch Chief Nicholas (Nick) Pettit said. Pettit, new Maintenance Branch Chief at the Soo Locks will oversee the team executing this year’s seasonal repairs.

Army Corps to collect Christmas trees at Woodcock Creek Lake

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District will begin accepting live evergreen Christmas trees at Woodcock Creek Lake, which will be used for aquatic habitat improvement projects, beginning Dec. 27. Visitors may drop off live Christmas trees until Jan. 17, 2023, to the Woodcock Creek Lake overlook amenity, located directly across from Siverling Road. Signs will be in place to help guide tree drop-offs.

Louisville VA Medical Center project wraps up first year of construction

It was a little over a year ago, Veterans Day 2021, that the first shovels kicked off work on the Louisville VA Medical Center during a groundbreaking ceremony. Now, with 20 percent of the scheduled construction time passed, work is taking place on almost every inch of the 34-acre site.

2022 Supervisor Training Program prepares Nashville District employees for their roles in leadership

Future USACE officers and civilians get schooled on military construction

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Louisville District, Military/IIS Project Management Branch Chief Rachael Haunz and Scott Air Force Base Area Engineer Jay Fowler provided an overview of the military construction program during a District Officer Introductory Course held at Scott AFB, Illinois, Dec. 9. Participants included mid-career officers, warrant officers and civilians across the enterprise who received their first assignment with the USACE.

Louisville District and Little Rock District partner to complete Razorback Inn

A ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the delivery of a 136,322-square-foot visiting quarters named the Razorback Inn at Little Rock Air Force Base in Little Rock, Arkansas, Nov. 30, 2022. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Louisville District and Little Rock District collaborated to complete the new four-story facility, which includes 250 guest rooms, 20 business suites, guest laundry facilities, housekeeping functional spaces, multi-functional lobby, coffee shop, business center, conference rooms, exercise room and restrooms.
