Locking temporarily suspended at McAlpine Locks and Dam

The lock chambers at McAlpine Locks and Dam (Ohio River mile 606.8 ) in Louisville, Kentucky, are currently closed to traffic due to a navigation accident, which occurred shortly after 4:00 p.m. today, March 8.

Corps of Engineers Begins Dredging Muskegon Harbor, First of Season

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District began dredging today, March 8, in Muskegon Harbor to remove about 133,000 cubic yards of sediment from the federal navigation channel. The project marks the start of the 2024 Detroit District dredging season on the Western Michigan shoreline of Lake Michigan to maintain Great Lakes navigation for commercial shipping to harbors along Western Michigan.

Last week, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Chicago District, hosted the T.J. O’Brien Major Rehab Structural Value Based Design Charrette at the district headquarters. Two of these meetings are planned with the first focusing on structural components and the next on mechanical updates for the lock.

Soo Locks Open Early for 2024 Shipping Season

The Soo Locks in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan will open the Poe Lock to all marine traffic at 6 p.m. on March 22, marking the start of the 2024 Great Lakes shipping season. The shipping industry requested an early season opening due the urging of major steel producers. “The St. Lawrence Seaway has announced that it will open this spring on March 22. We would like to match that early opening at the Soo,” President of the Lake Carriers’ Association James Weakley said. “We also note that the Seaway strike in 2023 and extreme wind events toward the end of the last operating season left the fleet with undelivered cargo.” “Our winter maintenance period is a critical time for us to invest in our aging locks,” Detroit District Commander Lt. Col. Brett Boyle said. “This year, a number of factors worked in our favor that allowed us to safely deliver this critical maintenance and also open to navigation traffic a few days early, with the St. Lawrence Seaway.”

USACE Chicago District continues to monitor transplant of rare wetland ecosystem at Heidelberg Material Service in Romeoville, Ill.

This month, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Chicago District, along with representatives from Illinois Dept. of Natural Resources (IDNR) and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), observed the transplant of a mesic dolomite prairie by Heidelberg Material Service (HMS) from a proposed mining location.

Dale Hollow Dam Road closing for scheduled maintenance

(March 1, 2024) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District announces Dale Hollow Dam Road is closing to all traffic across the dam 8 a.m. Tuesday, March 5 through Monday March 11, 2024, for preventative maintenance on and around the roadway.
