    Nashville District continues hydropower modernization repairs

    NASHVILLE, Tenn. (July 28, 2023) —The Nashville District continues use of funds granted under the Section 212 Water Resources Development Act of 2000 for hydropower plant rehabilitation to bring generators up to date through the Hydropower Modernization Program.

    The Environmental and Cultural Resources Section includes biologists, environmental specialists, physical scientists, environmental engineers, archaeologists, a tribal liaison, and a historian. Their mission includes protecting natural resources, wetlands, waterways, and locations of archaeological value.

    “We lived with floods, pretty much every year.” That was the reality for Saegertown Borough Manager Charles Lawrence and many others living in the wake of the frequently flooding French Creek before the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District built Woodcock Creek Lake Dam.
  • Pittsburgh District researcher flexes her ‘mussels’ toward doctorate degree

    Kristi Dobra is a recipient of the Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation scholarship. The Department of Defense funds the SMART program to provide education and workforce development opportunities for students pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering. or math. So far, the program has awarded more than 3,800 scholarships at more than 400 universities, from bachelor’s up to doctoral degrees.

    Kids at Lower Twin Campground built their own bluebird boxes and they did an excellent job!!!! This was a learning opportunity that continues when they hang their boxes and get to watch birds move in. Thank you, Ranger Autumn Elliott and Volunteers Scottie and Michelle Owens for making this event great for these kids

  • Annual Maintenance Bulkhead Exercise

    While conducting the annual maintenance bulkhead exercise, access across Sutton Dam to the Jerimiah Carpenter hiking trail was closed. This important exercise enables staff the opportunity to maintain a state of readiness and to test the various pieces of equipment and steps required to complete the process.

  • From Flood Control to Hydropower: Unveiling the Legacy of Dale Hollow Lake and Dam

    CELINA, Tenn. (July. 20, 2023) – A monumental feat of engineering and progress stands tall in the heart of the Cumberland River basin. Dale Hollow Dam and Lake, authorized by the Flood Control Act of 1938 and the River and Harbor Act of 1946, emerged to control the floodwaters of the Obey River and contribute to the reduction of flood levels at municipal, industrial, and agricultural areas along the Cumberland, lower Ohio, and Mississippi Rivers.
