New Buffalo Harbor, Michigan is located at the mouth of the Galien River on the southeast shore of Lake Michigan in Berrien Country, about 45 miles easterly from Chicago, Illinois. The project was authorized by the Rivers and Harbors Act of October 22, 1962. The project includes construction of two breakwaters, one extending lakeward for 1,305 feet from the shore northeast of the Galien River mouth, and the other for 740 feet from the shore on the southwest side; dredging a channel 10 feet deep, 80 to 180 feet wide, and about 850 feet long from the lake to the river mouth, thence 8 feet deep and 80 feet wide for 1,250 feet in the river. The harbor services primarily recreational navigation interests.
