Lauren Schifferle, a hydraulics civil engineer for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District, started her career at USACE eight years go. Today, among many responsibilities, she's responsible for providing sound advice and counsel to the International Joint Commission. The IJC is dedicated to peacefully collaborating on unique problems pertaining to the Great Lakes.

Why it Matters

People are our most valuable resource at USACE. Schifferle's journey exemplifies how investing early in training, mentorship, development and education empowers our members to take on critical responsibilities with the corps. We would not be able to complete our mission without quickly instilling strong leadership skills for all our members.

About the Trip
  • Over a dozen members, including biologists, project managers, and engineers, from Chicago, Detroit and Buffalo Districts came to Buffalo, New York, for a week to learn about everything from hiring & interviews, leading change, working with contractors, and group presentations.
  • On day one they toured the New York Power Authority's, Niagara Power Vista where they received a briefing on the International Joint Commission and toured the hydroelectric facility.
  • They then went to Goat Island, a small island neighboring the horseshoe falls at Niagara Falls, New York.
