  • Mount Morris Dam & Recreation Area Welcomes Visitors for 2024 Season

    The William B. Hoyt II Visitor Center at the Mount Morris Dam and Recreation Area opens to the public Wednesday, May 1 for its 2024 visitor season. Located on the Genesee River next to Letchworth State Park, the dam provides flood protection to downstream communities, including the City of Rochester, as well as a place to enjoy nature and outdoor recreation for the 72nd year.
  • Corps of Engineers to start dredging Cleveland Harbor

    Dredging of the Cleveland Harbor federal navigation channel by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District and its contractor, Michigan-based Ryba Marine Construction Co., will begin in May. Dredging of harbors like Cleveland’s ensures accessible depths for large vessels, the continued flow of commodities across the Great Lakes, and the economic viability of United States waterways.
  • USACE Buffalo District Hosts Public Information Session for NFSS

    U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District will host a public information session to provide project updates for the Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program, Niagara Falls Storage Site (NFSS) project, Lewiston, NY. This event will provide an opportunity to engage with the Corps of Engineers' Integrated Technical Office staff to gain a deeper understanding of the status of ongoing and future activities at the site. This meeting will be recorded, and a video will be posted to the project information website for anyone who cannot attend.
  • North Pier Repairs Kick Off More Than $7.5M in 2024 Army Corps Projects in Erie

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Buffalo District and its contractor, Chicago-based Architectural Consulting Group, will begin construction on Erie Harbor’s north pier in mid-April, repairing approximately 1,800 feet of the damaged structure. The work is part of more than $7.5 million worth of activity in Erie by USACE in 2024, including dredging of the harbor’s federal navigation channel and continuation of the Presque Isle Beach Nourishment project.
  • Mount Morris Dam Visitor Center Open for Total Solar Eclipse Weekend

    The Mount Morris Dam and Recreation Area Visitor Center will open early for visitors to watch the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse and enjoy eclipse weekend in Western New York. The Mount Morris Dam is in the “path of totality,” offering visitors an incredible location to view this historic event on Monday, April 8, and enjoy eclipse-themed tours inside the dam on the Saturday and Sunday before.
  • FY25 President's Budget designates $155 Million for Buffalo District Projects

    The President’s Budget for fiscal year 2025 released yesterday includes more than $7.2 billion in discretionary funding for the Civil Works program of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, with just over $155 million set aside for Buffalo District projects.
  • NYS general permit now available: Expedited response after major storm events

    The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) have issued the first State Programmatic General Permit (NYSPGP-1), which authorizes activities to facilitate the recovery and restoration of damaged properties, projects, aquatic resources, and infrastructure following major storm events. NYSPGP-1 ensures important environmental safeguards and encourages best management practices while agencies work to bring infrastructure back online and retore quality of life for communities quickly, and without unnecessary reviews. This permit will also help project sponsors and the public obtain any Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) reimbursements they may be eligible for following specific storm events that are declared federal disasters.
  • 2024 Black Rock Lock Operations Schedule Announced

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District is announcing the Black Rock Lock operations schedule for the 2024 navigation season. The Black Rock Lock is one of three lock systems operated and maintained by USACE on the U.S. side of the Great Lakes and allows boats to bypass the rapids and fast currents of the Niagara River at the outlet of Lake Erie. More than 2,300 vessels and 94,000 metric tons of commerce passed through the lock in fiscal year 2023.
  • Buffalo River Habitat Restoration Completed at Katherine Street

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District, in partnership with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, has completed closeout of the habitat restoration along the Buffalo River near Katherine Street. The $2.7 million project, funded by the EPA’s Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, was the final habitat restoration project required to complete management actions before delisting the Buffalo River Area of Concern.
  • Remediation Contract for Former Harshaw Chemical Company Awarded

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District awarded a $13.4 million contract on December 20 to Enviro-Fix Solutions, LLC for the remedial action of Operable Units (OU) 1 and 2 of the Former Harshaw Chemical Company Site, as part of the Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program (FUSRAP). The contract includes complete removal of contaminated FUSRAP-related soil and debris to be disposed at an approved off-site facility and leaves the site protective of human health and the environment.
