  • USACE Buffalo District Announces 2022 Operations Schedule for Black Rock Lock

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Buffalo District is announcing the Black Rock Lock operations schedule for the 2022 navigation season. The Black Rock Lock is one of three lock systems operated and maintained by USACE on the U.S. side of the Great Lakes and saw more than 2,600 vessels and 60,000 metric tons of commerce pass through its walls in fiscal year 2021.
  • Locking temporarily suspended at Markland Locks and Dam

    At approximately 3:00 p.m. today, October 21, 2021, navigation traffic was halted to facilitate a hydraulic cylinder repair on the main (1,200 foot) lock chamber at Markland Locks and Dam (Ohio River Mile 531.5). The closure will last until approximately 12:00 p.m. (EDT) on Saturday, October 23, 2021. Upon completion of the hydraulic cylinder repairs, traffic will resume in the main chamber.
  • Locking temporarily suspended at McAlpine Locks and Dam

    The south (landside) chamber at McAlpine Locks and Dam (Ohio River mile 606.8) in Louisville, Kentucky, is currently closed to traffic due to a navigation accident involving the bridge over the lock chamber approach.

    A public meeting is being held in Olmsted, Illinois, Tuesday, May 11, to inform the community about the blasting plan for the upcoming demolition work at Lock and Dam 53 on the Ohio River.

    Locking operations have been temporarily suspended at Markland Locks and Dam on the Ohio River (Ohio River Mile 531.5) due to high water.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District released its Fiscal Year 2021 Work Plan for the Army Civil Works program, Jan. 19.
  • Soo Locks closing for seasonal repair, maintenance

    DETROIT- The Soo Locks in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan will close to marine traffic beginning 11:59 p.m. January 15 through 12:01 a.m. March 25 to perform critical maintenance. The operating season is fixed by federal regulation and is driven in part by the feasibility of vessels operating in typical ice conditions. Every year, the Corps uses the winter period to perform maintenance to keep the Soo Locks operating. The Soo Area Office team works long hours in extreme conditions to complete a significant amount of maintenance during this annual closure period. The work they perform is unique, especially given the harsh northern Michigan conditions they work in.
