FAYETTE COUNTY, Pa. -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District is hosting a project dedication ceremony marking the completion of the National Pike Water Authority (NPWA) storage tank project in Henry Clay Township in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. The project increases the potable water supply to residents in four Fayette County municipalities.
WHEN: Tuesday, September 20, 2022, at 9:30 a.m.
WHERE: Adjacent to 706 National Pike, Markleysburg, PA 15459.
WHO: The event is not open to the public.
WHAT: Project dedication ceremony celebrating the completion of the Section 313 NWPA Storage Tank Project in Henry Clay Township.
WHY: The NWPA owns and operates the water distribution system servicing the Henry Clay, Markleysburg, Steward and Wharton municipalities in Fayette County. In partnership with the NWPA, the district designed and constructed an additional 330,000-gallon steel-elevated water tank to meet expanding water-supply needs and increase the supply of potable water for Fayette County residents.
“This project is a testimony to the value Section 313 programs can give communities,” said Jesse Bisnette, project manager, Pittsburgh District. “The additional water tank provides a much-needed addition to county residents' access to clean drinking water.”
In addition to designing and constructing an additional water tank, the project involved installing 200 feet of PCV piping, a digital control system and a tank mixer. The $803,300 project shared the cost at a rate of 75 to 25, respectively, between the federal and non-federal sponsors.
BACKGROUND: Section 313 of the Water Resources Development Act of 1992, as amended, authorizes the Corps of Engineers to provide support to communities for projects such as wastewater treatment and related facilities; water supply; storage, treatment, and distribution facilities; and surface water resource projection and development in south-central Pennsylvania. The program addresses widespread community problems regarding inadequate wastewater treatment, contaminated sources of drinking water, inadequate water supply capabilities, and degraded surface and groundwater quality.
District Background: Pittsburgh District’s 26,000 square miles include portions of western Pennsylvania, northern West Virginia, eastern Ohio, western Maryland and southwestern New York. Our jurisdiction has more than 328 miles of navigable waterways, 23 navigation locks and dams, 16 multi-purpose reservoirs, 42 local flood-protection projects and other projects to protect and enhance the nation’s water resources, infrastructure and environment.
