The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District will host a semicentennial celebration commemorating the completed construction of Woodcock Creek Dam, July 14.

The Woodcock Creek dam was built in 1973. Since it’s construction, the dam has provided flood protection for the French Creek system and saved downstream communities more than $40 million in flood damages.

To commemorate this major milestone, Woodcock Creek Lake will host a celebration ceremony at the dam overlook from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Friday, July 14. The event will include a speech from Pittsburgh District Commander Adam Czekanski, several guest speakers and a time capsule-dedication ceremony. The time capsule will be opened at the dam’s centennial anniversary in 2073.

The event is open to the public. Parking is available at the main dam parking site, the Bossard Nature Area, and the overlook and outflow recreation areas. A shuttle will transport attendees from each parking area to the ceremony at the overlook recreation area.

On July 15, the public is invited to watch a 36-hole disc-golf tournament from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. The public is also invited to partake in a car cruise across the dam crest from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. No registration is required for attending the car cruise.

For more information, contact the Woodcock Creek Lake office at 814-763-4422, Mondays – Fridays from 7 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.

Woodcock Creek Lake is one of Pittsburgh District’s 16 multi-purpose flood-control reservoirs. In addition to providing flood control for the French Creek system, the lake hosts a variety of recreation opportunities including boating, fishing, hiking, hunting and disc golf.

Pittsburgh District’s 26,000 square miles include parts of western Pennsylvania, northern West Virginia, eastern Ohio, western Maryland, and southwestern New York. Our jurisdiction includes more than 328 miles of navigable waterways, 23 navigation locks and dams, 16 multi-purpose reservoirs, 42 local flood-protection projects, and other projects to protect and enhance the Nation’s water resources, infrastructure and environment.
