DETROIT – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District, announces that the Poe Lock, located at the Soo Locks in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, is back in service after repairs to critical gate components.
The Poe Lock was taken out of service Tuesday, October 23, for approximately nine hours to repair worn parts on one of the gates. The Corps determined that this planned outage was critical in order to make repairs to a miter gate before mid-December.
The original estimate for this outage was 12 – 24 hours, but the team at the Soo Locks planned ahead and had everything in place to minimize the length of the disruption.
Prior to the closure, the Corps notified the shipping industry of the expected delays to navigation. There was some impact to navigation with three vessels waiting for roughly eight hours.
