Green River Dam No. 5 removal work to resume in Summer 2024

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Louisville District, in partnership with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and The Nature Conservancy (TNC), plans to resume work on the removal of the Green River Lock and Dam No. 5 on the Green River in Kentucky. Demolition efforts are scheduled to resume as early as May/June 2024, depending on appropriate river levels.

Buffalo River Habitat Restoration Completed at Katherine Street

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District, in partnership with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, has completed closeout of the habitat restoration along the Buffalo River near Katherine Street. The $2.7 million project, funded by the EPA’s Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, was the final habitat restoration project required to complete management actions before delisting the Buffalo River Area of Concern.

Brookville Lake turns 50, announces celebratory event in 2025

Brookville Lake, located in Franklin and Union counties in Brookville, Indiana celebrates its 50th Anniversary this month. The dam was built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Louisville District for the primary purpose of flood risk management and became operational in January 1974.

Soo Locks Closing for Seasonal Repair, Maintenance

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Soo Locks in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan will close to all marine traffic beginning 11:59 p.m. January 15, or until commercial traffic ceases, through 12:01 a.m. March 25 to perform seasonal critical maintenance. Federal regulation (33 CFR 207.440) establishes the operating season based on the feasibility of vessels operating during typical Great Lakes ice conditions. “Every year, the Corps of Engineers uses the non-navigation winter period to perform maintenance and keep the Soo Locks operating,” Maintenance Branch Chief Nicholas Pettit said. “The Detroit District team works long hours in extreme conditions to complete a significant amount of maintenance during this annual closure period. The work they perform is unique, especially given the harsh northern Michigan winter conditions they work in.”

Army Corps of Engineers waives day use fees at recreation areas in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) announced today that it will waive day use fees at its more than 2,850 USACE-operated recreation areas nationwide in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, January 15. The waiver covers fees for boat launch ramps and swimming beaches. The waiver does not apply to camping and camping-related services, or fees for specialized facilities (group picnic shelters) and events. Other agencies that manage recreation areas on USACE lands are encouraged, but not required, to offer the waiver in the areas that they manage.

Army Corps to collect Christmas trees at Woodcock Creek Lake
