Atwood Lake serves as the Project Office for the projects located within the Lower Tuscarawas section of the Muskingum Area. It was authorized by Section 4 of the Flood Control Act (FCA) of 1938, as amended by Section 4 of the FCA of 1939. Primary project purposes are flood damage reduction, recreation, and fish and wildlife. The dam is a rolled earth-fill with impervious core, 65 ft. tall, 3,700 long and 30 ft. wide at the top and 360 ft. wide at the base. The dam was completed in September 1936 and serves a drainage area of 70 square miles. The intake structure contains three 3.5 x 7 ft. gated conduits through the south abutment of the dam, and a stilling basin. To maintain minimum pool, a 1.5 ft. diameter siphon is located in each of the two outer conduits, in front of the floodgates, and discharges into the middle conduit below the gate. Land includes 109 fee acres and 5,148 flowage easement acres. Corps of Engineers recreational facilities includes a day use area.

Recreation Opportunities
Visitor Center
No Visitor Center is available at this project. MWCD has an Activity Center within its park. This facility provides day to day information on campground activities and current events. The Activity Center is staffed April - October or upon request out of season. For more information contact Atwood Lake Park Office (330)-343-6780.
Boating
A Public Launch ramp for the boating enthusiasts and fishermen is available near the Atwood Lake Dam year round.
Camping
Camping at Atwood Lake is available through MWCD (330)-343-6780 or visit their website mwcd.org Federal Recreation passes such as Golden Age, Golden Access, or America the Beautiful - National Park and Federal Recreation Lands Access Passes are not honored at MWCD facilities, but anyone over the age of 60 or those who have a Golden Buckeye Card receive a 10% discount.

Day-use
Picnic sites are available at the Atwood Lake Day Use Area adjacent to the dam. Additional Picnic Site and Picnic Shelters are located within the Atwood Lake Park. For more information contact Atwood Lake Park Office (330)-343-6780.
Fishing
Fishing is permitted at the Atwood Lake Day Use Area and below the dam.
Hunting
With the abundant wildlife, Atwood Lake has become a popular hunting destination. All State of Ohio hunting and trapping regulations must be followed. Map of hunting areas.
Marinas
There are two marinas located on the lake, which are operated by private enterprise. For all boating inquiries contact Atwood Lake Boats (330)-364-4703.
Swimming
No swimming areas are available at this project. MWCD has designated three designated swimming areas (one is within the park & two are by boat access). For more information contact Atwood Lake Park Office (330) 343-6780.
Trails
Bicycles are permitted on the state highways, and bicycle trails are located within the MWCD park.
Horseback riding is available from private businesses near the MWCD park.
Limited hiking is available around Atwood Dam. A more extensive hiking trail system is available within Atwood Lake Park.

Firearms
Possession of firearms in a federal facility, including locks, dams, power plants, ranger stations, buildings, switchyards, recreation facilities, warehouses, and offices is strictly prohibited. This prohibition includes the storage or transporting of a personally owned firearm in controlled access parking areas or Government vehicles, heavy equipment, boats and vessels under the operational control of the District regardless of its location. Exceptions for Federal employees are only allowed for Federal law enforcement officers or where possession of a firearm is specifically authorized by law.
Fireworks
Fireworks, along with explosives, firearms and other weapons are prohibited on Government Property. Detailed information can be found in Title 36, The Rules and Regulations that Govern Corps of Enginees Water Resource Projects, Section 327.13.
