    Cumberland River intertwined with story of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers

    NASHVILLE, Tenn. (June 3, 2025) – The steady flow of the Cumberland River is intertwined with the story of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. As the Army and USACE mark a quarter-millennium of service this month, it’s fitting to highlight the Nashville District’s enduring legacy in shaping the landscape of the region, reducing flood risk, powering communities, establishing navigation, promoting safe recreation, and stewarding natural resources.

    The Mahoning Creek Dam and reservoir are managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District. The dam is a concrete gravity dam that provides flood risk reduction to the lower Allegheny River Valley and upper Ohio River.

    Tucked into a sleepy creek valley of Western Pennsylvania, the Mahoning Creek Dam has stood for 84 years, holding back waters to protect communities from flooding.

    Cordell Hull Lake volunteers and USACE honored with Public Lands Partner Award

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Cordell Hull Lake, and the Upper Cumberland Southern Off Road Bicycle Association (UCSORBA) were recently recognized with the Public Lands Partner Award at the 2025 Public Lands Alliance Convention and Annual Trade Show.

    Public affairs specialists from across the Great Lakes and Ohio River Division came to the Huntington District to increase their video skills during the division’s second regional visual storytelling workshop. During the workshop, participants gained experience in video camera operation, shot-listing, story planning, video editing, sound design, camera movements and more.

    SOMERSET, Ky. (Jan. 17, 2024) – In 1969, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District produced a pamphlet titled “A Vacation Paradise…Lake Cumberland.” Back in those days, there were no smartphones, or portable computers, and Google had not been invented. In fact, the first GPS satellite was not launched until 1978. How in the world did thousands and thousands of visitors find their way to the shores of Lake Cumberland? They followed the signs.

    Corps of Engineers Rangers Honored for Lifesaving Rescue

    Two U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Park Rangers were awarded the Army Civilian Service Achievement Medal for a lifesaving rescue of an elderly hiker on New York’s Finger Lakes Trail. The 71-year-old hiker wandered off the trail in the 4,000-acre Mount Morris Recreation Area in early October and called the Mount Morris Dam for help.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District constructed Shenango River Lake to reduce flooding, save lives and protect property. However, in the years since, the dam, reservoir and federal lands have become a major hotspot for outdoor recreation.
