    From Classroom to Conemaugh: Pittsburgh Students Dive into Dam Engineering

    Park Ranger April Richard's sturdy boots crunched on the gravel path as she led the tour group up a hillside to an overlook platform. Richards, the ranger at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District’s Conemaugh River Lake, welcomed a group of students and began their guided tour. She started by discussing the fundamental nature of the dam.

    On Sept 14, 2022, Pittsburgh District Commander Adam Czekanski signs a $426,000 federal cost-share agreement for a Section 22 Planning Assistance to States project to develop a stormwater management plan for the Indiana County community in Pennsylvania. This Valentine’s Day, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District highlights some of our employees who do what they love while accomplishing critical roles that deliver the district’s mission to the nation. We asked them about their childhood hobbies and interests and how those passions grew into careers.

    Pittsburgh District joins Duquesne University to form a stunning partnership

    Every organization says they are a learning organization, but the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has taken its quest for innovation to a stunning level. During the 2021 recreation season, experts from the Pittsburgh District began a partnership with Duquesne University’s biology department. The goal was to test water quality within Crooked Creek Lake’s watershed called an “electrofishing survey,” which the corps had not used before.

    Meet Apollo, the peregrine falcon who stole the show. Hundreds of people attended the second-annual Eagle Fest on Saturday, Jan. 8, which was hosted by the Shenango River Watchers.     As people’s schedules start calming down after the Christmas season, bird enthusiasts and nature lovers alike had the chance to come together at Shenango River Lake and learn about America’s avian rockstar: the bald eagle.
  • Col. Adam Czekanski, district commander, attended a meeting to sign a Project-Partnership Agreement with officials to kickstart the project. Signing the partnership agreement is the first step in improving the treatment plant’s efficiency while reducing inflow and infiltration within the collection system in Tyler and Wetzel counties. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District entered a partnership agreement with the city of Paden City, West Virginia, to upgrade sanitary sewer collection and treatment facilities as part of a $2 million Section 219 Environmental Infrastructure project, Thursday, Jan. 6.

    Corps upgrades Paden City’s wastewater treatment systems

    Ever had a problem with the septic tank in your yard? The cost to replace it, and consequences if you do not, can really stink – even more so when the problem is on a community-wide level. That is why the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District is partnering with Paden City to upgrade the sanitary sewer collection and treatment facilities in Tyler and Wetzel counties as part of a $2 million environmental infrastructure project.
  • Leah and Evan Morgan, husband and wife team from Huntington District, U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, share the hand-drawn Christmas tree, sent to them by their Sunday school, age group 7 to 11, of First Missionary Baptist Church, Culloden, West Virginia. Leah, an administrative support assistant, deployed Nov. 14, and Evan, a civil engineer technician, joined her Dec. 22 to support the Corps Task Force Power Restoration mission.

    Task Force Power’s husband, wife team deliver ‘inseparable’ disaster support

    Evan and Leah Morgan have been inseparable since 2010, their freshman year at Marshall University, Huntington, West Virginia. The husband and wife team from Huntington District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, knew they wanted to support the recovery mission in Puerto Rico. The only consideration was timing: would the stars align so this couple could deploy together? The answer came on Nov. 14, when Leah, a district contract purchasing agent, deployed to Puerto Rico to support the Task Force Power Restoration mission. Evan, a civil engineer, wouldn’t join her until Dec. 22.

    Country Music Artist Tanya Tucker recently partnered with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to produce a public service announcement encouraging her fans to wear their life jackets. She had her first hit, "Delta Dawn", in 1972 at the age of 13. Over the succeeding decades, Tucker became one of the few child performers to mature into adulthood without losing her audience, and during the course of her career, she notched a streak of Top 10 and Top 40 hits.

    NASHVILLE, Tenn. (May 21, 2015) -- Country Music Legend and Hall of Fame Artist Tanya Tucker is partnering with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers this Memorial Day weekend to encourage her fans to be safe on the water and to wear a life jacket.
