DETROIT – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District, announces the Poe Lock, located at the Soo Locks in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, will be out of service Tuesday, October 23, to repair critical gate components.

The Corps plans to close the lock for approximately 12-24 hours starting in the morning and has coordinated with the shipping industry and provided them with advanced notice. There will be some impact to navigation.

The Corps has determined that this planned outage is critical in order to make repairs, to a heated gate before mid-December. Not doing so could lead to an unexpected failure.

The current estimate for this outage is a minimum of 12 hours. The Corps has notified the shipping industry of the expected delays to navigation, but smaller ships may still traverse the MacArthur Lock.
