Great Lakes and Ohio River leadership visits Pittsburgh District
A towboat navigates through the newly-opened channel past the Monongahela River Locks and Dam 3 near Elizabeth, Pennsylvania, Dec. 9, 2024. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District demolished the facility’s dam to open the channel and will remove the lock chambers beginning in 2025. The Pittsburgh District’s area of responsibility covers 26,000 square miles, which includes 23 locks and dams on 328 miles of navigable waterways and 16 multi-purpose flood-control reservoirs. During his visit, Quander toured navigation projects on the lower Monongahela River, which highlighted advancements in infrastructure and remote operations, and recognized the efforts of Pittsburgh District employees.
