On April 23, 2025, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers hosted a Shallow Draft Stakeholder Meeting with both virtual and in-person attendance. This session focused on current priorities for the Great Lakes Navigation System (GLNS), including harbor maintenance, budget allocations, and stakeholder input for FY25 needs.

Nick Zager, Chief of the Operations Division for the Detroit District, led the presentation, highlighting program accomplishments, key maintenance challenges, and asset renewal efforts across the shallow draft network.

Topics addressed included:

  • System-wide condition updates for shallow draft harbors
  • FY24 funded projects and remaining needs
  • Future priorities for harbor dredging and structure repair

The most recent appropriations for the Department of War expired at 11:59 p.m. EST on September 30, 2025. Military personnel will continue in a normal duty status without pay until such time as a continuing resolution or appropriations are passed by Congress and signed into law. Civilian personnel not engaged in exempted or excepted activities will be placed in a non-work, non-pay status.
