Saugatuck Harbor, Michigan is located on the east shore of Lake Michigan, about 90 miles northeasterly from Chicago, Illinois and 22 miles northerly from South Haven, Michigan. The project was authorized by the Rivers and Harbors Acts of 3 June 1896, 2 March 1907 and 25 June 1910. The project provides for an entrance channel between parallel piers and revetments 200 feet apart, having lengths of 2,778 and 2,514 feet for the north and south structures, respectively, and for a channel 16 feet deep and 100 feet from that depth in Lake Michigan to the mouth of the river; thence 14 feet deep and 90 feet wide in the Kalamazoo River to Saugatuck, Michigan, at the north end of Kalamazoo Lake, a distance of 9,000 feet. All channels are maintained at 14 feet deep. The harbor services primarily recreational navigation interests and occasional cruise ships.
