The original building, nicknamed the "white elephant," is shown in the upper right. It is now part of a larger group, each of which is a necessary part of the remediation process. From removal from the trenches to exiting from the site, the highly trained workers involved in the remediation process all have specialized qualifications to ensure the safety of workers and the community.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Buffalo and Pittsburgh districts are conducting a second five-year review of the selected remedy for the Shallow Land Disposal Area (SLDA) Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program (FUSRAP) site.

The selected remedy identified in the Record of Decision, as amended, involves the excavation, treatment, and off-site disposal of contaminated soil and waste. The purpose of the five-year review is to evaluate the effectiveness of this selected remedy.

As part of the process, the Army Corps of Engineers seeks to understand residents, nearby businesses, public officials, site personnel, school officials, public interest groups and other stakeholders’ overall impression of the project. The districts request input on topics about accessibility of on-site activities, site progress, and effects of operations on the surrounding community.

If you are interested in submitting your comments, please complete the questionnaire on the SLDA website here:

The Corps of Engineers appreciates your comments and will issue a public notice once the Five-Year Review Report is available and posted to the SLDA project website.
