Bay Mills Shoreline Erosion Tribal Partnership Study Sec 203

Detroit District
Published March 12, 2025
Expiration date: 4/13/2025

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Detroit District, has prepared the Integrated Feasibility Report and Environmental Assessment (IFR/EA) to investigate restoration of the shoreline along the Bay Mills Indian Community, located in the upper peninsula of Michigan, to preserve cultural and natural resources.

The tentatively selected alternative includes shoreline armoring at the cemetery, partial removal of the existing groin, beach nourishment along the campground with all work landward of the ordinary high water mark (OHWM) of Lake Superior. Up to 500 feet of steel sheet pile (SSP) wall would be installed along the shoreline in front of the cemetery to stop erosion and stabilize the bluff. The SSP wall would include return walls at either end to prevent flanking. A toe stone berm would be placed in front of the SSP wall to minimize impacts of wave reflection off the SSP with all work located landward of the OHWM. The portion of the L-shaped groin located landward of the OHWM would also be removed.
