Is Union City Dam broken? The dry bed reservoir functions just right
An inside perspective from the downstream conduit at the stilling basin and training walls in Saegertown, Pennsylvania, May 2023. Union City Dam was built in 1971 and is the only “dry” dam among the sixteen flood-control reservoirs operated by the Pittsburgh District, meaning it does not maintain a permanent pool. The dam is self-regulated and does not require staff to operate machinery from a control tower – the dam releases water via a conduit invert and if the pool level eclipses a set elevation, water is automatically released through the dam’s spillway crest.
