VA Division employee brings wealth of knowledge, inspiration to job

Mechille Peters has seen a lot of changes in the construction industry over her 25-year career, both in the way construction is done and the roles women have played over the years. Peters is a quality assurance construction representative for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Louisville District. She’s been with USACE for four months – working on the Louisville VA Medical Center construction project in Louisville, Kentucky. Peters ensures the Contractor Quality Control (CQC) plan is followed to obtain the quality of the contract plans and specifications required for the project.

Former co-op student now leads District’s current largest project

Louisville, Ky. – With hard work and perseverance, anything is possible, just ask Tara O’Leary. Little did she know that when she started working for the Louisville District in 1996 that she would one day be leading the team on one of its mega-projects. O’Leary, who is now the Deputy Chief of the Veterans Affairs Division and Louisville VAMC project manager, started her journey with the district as a co-op student while attending the University of Louisville to study engineering.

Re-used materials add value to construction project

Since the beginning of construction of the Louisville VA Medical Center in December 2021, the site has seen a lot of change and one of the most noticeable early changes was it going from a 35-acre grassy field to much of the earth materials being collected and sorted in large piles on the south side of the property. What some may think of as waste materials - the expected leftovers from earthwork, isn’t going to waste. In fact, more than 70,000 cubic yards of material have been reused in multiple ways in construction on the site.

Louisville VA Medical Center site sees more activity as work progresses

Construction on the new Louisville VA Medical Center being built in Louisville, Kentucky, has only been ongoing for five months, but the site already looks quite different from how it appeared during last year’s Veterans’ Day groundbreaking ceremony. Members of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Louisville District’s VA Division and the contracting teams have been hard at work during the initial stages of this mega-project, said Melody Thompson, Louisville VA Medical Center project manager.

VA, USACE break ground on Louisville VA Medical Center

History was made on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, 2021, as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Louisville District, and the Department of Veterans Affairs broke ground on the much-anticipated Louisville VA Medical Center. The new 104 bed, full-service hospital located on Brownsboro Road in Louisville, Kentucky, will provide world-class healthcare for more than 45,000 Veterans in Kentucky and Southern Indiana.
