MCKEE, Ky. -- MCKEE, Ky. (Nov. 27, 2024) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District is seeking public feedback related to a proposed raw water intake improvement project located in Jackson County, Kentucky.
The scoping letter for this proposed action may be accessed here: https://usace.contentdm.oclc.org/utils/getfile/collection/p16021coll7/id/27081
The proposed project is based on the Jackson County Water Association’s need to provide greater water flow into the treatment plant to meet public demand for safe, potable drinking water. The district intends to provide design and construction assistance to Jackson County for this water-related development project subject to the provisions of Section 531 of the Water Resources Development Act of 1966.
In accordance with NEPA, USACE will evaluate potential impacts of the proposed action. Project alternatives being considered include approval of the proposed intake improvements and disapproval of the proposed plan, which is considered the no action alternative. The proposed project would include replacement of the existing water intake structure and corresponding cast iron waterline with a new ductile iron and HDPE siphon waterline around the existing dam to supply the water treatment plant with a greater volume of water. Water flow would be increased regardless of lake level.
This news release also serves to initiate the public involvement requirements of Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended. Section 106, implemented by regulations 36 CFR Part 800, requires USACE to consider the effects of its undertakings on historic properties. Cultural resource investigations are planned, and the results will be coordinated with the Kentucky State Historic Preservation Officer, Federally Recognized Native American Tribes, and other consulting parties as necessary.
Members of the public and partnership agency personnel are invited to share their comments concerning environmental, cultural, and socioeconomic issues regarding the Jackson County Raw Water Intake Improvement Project. Comments, request for information, or questions concerning the proposed action should be submitted no later than Dec. 19, 2024. Please email comments to david.a.adams@usace.army.mil.
