Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center participates in Duluth’s inaugural “Cold Front Celebration”

DETROIT – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District’s Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center will participate in the city of Duluth’s "Cold Front Celebration" on Saturday, February 3, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

During this event the Maritime Visitor Center, located in Duluth Minn., will present a hypothermia activity from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., where the Corps will demonstrate how to safely enjoy winter activities around waterways. Also, at specific times that day, the Corps will present "Sub-Zero," the obstacles Great Lakes mariners face in the winter; and show "Tall Waters, Steel Ships," which covers the massive Mataafa Storm in 1905 that wrecked 29 Great Lakes vessels.

Location: Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center, 600 Canal Park Drive, Duluth, Minn.

Event: Cold Front Celebration

When: Saturday, 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Activities:

 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Hypothermia activity, in the Observatory

Presenter: India Phillips, park ranger, in the Lecture Hall

 11:00 a.m. -- "Sub-Zero," obstacles Great Lakes mariners face

 2:00 p.m. – "Tall Waters, Steel Ships," the massive Mataafa Storm in 1905

Cost: FREE

The visitor center winter hours are Friday - Sunday 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., closed Monday - Thursday until March 16, 2018.

The Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center features information on the history of Lake Superior, the shipping activity in the Twin Ports of Duluth/Superior harbors, and other work the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers does throughout the region.
