Locking temporarily suspended at Newburgh Locks and Dam

Louisville District
Published Feb. 8, 2022

The lock chambers at Newburgh Locks and Dam (Ohio River mile 776.1) in Newburgh, Indiana, are currently closed to traffic due to a navigation accident, which occurred at 1 a.m. CST on Feb. 8. There were no injuries reported and all personnel were accounted for.

Eight barges are currently strung across the dam and three were recovered downstream by another vessel. Therefore, the locks and dam will remain closed until the condition of the barges on the dam can be further assessed today.

All mariners should take direction from the lock operators at Newburgh Locks and Dam.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will continue to coordinate closely with the U.S. Coast Guard and the towing industry during this temporary closure.
