Restoring Johnstown Local Protection Project
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District contractors remove sediment and vegetation from the Conemaugh River to clear obstructions from the Johnstown Local Flood Protection Project in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, Oct. 23, 2024. The Johnstown Local Flood Protection Project became the nation's second largest flood control project when it was constructed between 1938 and 1943 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Over the years, the channel filled with soil and vegetation, requiring maintenance and removal. Most recently, the Pittsburgh District began removing sediments from the river in 2019. The sediment removal spans five years and multiple contracts to clear nine miles of riverways both upstream and downstream of Johnstown. In its fourth year of removal, the Pittsburgh District will haul 28,000 cubic yards of sediment, requiring approximately 2,000 truckloads.
