Corps invites public to hike rediscovered segment of Trail of Tears
Native History Association President Pat Cummins stands on Twin Forks Horse Trail near the East Fork Recreation Area in Smyrna, Tenn., May 9, 2015 and announces he is standing on the rediscovered segment of the Trail of Tears. Signs have been posted that mark the area where Cherokee Indians passed through the area in 1838 on the way to Indian Territory in present day Oklahoma. Cummins recounted the first time he stood on that stretch of the trail and realized he was the first person, the first Cherokee, to knowingly visit this path in a very long time for the cause of preserving its history and recognizing its significance.
