Lt. Col. Aaron Anderson assumed command of the Buffalo District on June 26, 2026. He previously served as chief of engineer doctrine for the Maneuver Support Center of Excellence at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, from 2024 to 2026.
A Muskegon, Michigan, native, Anderson commissioned into the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 2008 from the U.S. Military Academy with a civil engineering bachelor’s degree. He holds master’s degrees in engineering management from the Missouri University of Science and Technology, civil engineering from the University of Michigan, and military operations from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. He is a licensed professional engineer in Missouri and a certified project management professional.
Anderson’s first assignments were as reconnaissance officer in the 6th Engineer Battalion and platoon leader in the 56th Engineer Company (Vertical) at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, from 2009 to 2010. Following a deployment to Soto Cano Air Base in Honduras as part of Joint Task Force-Bravo from 2010 to 2011, he served as the 6th Engineer Battalion S-3 plans and construction officer until 2012.
Upon completing the Engineer Advanced Course, Anderson deployed to Afghanistan in 2014 with the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division as the brigade engineer plans officer in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. During the deployment, he assumed command of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Brigade Special Troops Battalion and remained in command through 2015 as the unit reflagged to the 39th Brigade Engineer Battalion.
Anderson attended Advanced Civil Schooling at the University of Michigan, followed by an assignment as a project manager with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Portland District from 2017 to 2018.
Upon completion of the Intermediate Level Education and Advanced Military Studies programs at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College in 2020, Anderson joined the 10th Mountain Division as a CJ-5 plans officer and deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Resolute Support.
Following the deployment, he served as a 10th Mountain Division G-5 planner at Fort Drum, New York, before transitioning to the 1st Brigade Combat Team and assuming the role of assistant brigade engineer from 2021 to 2022. Anderson served as the brigade executive officer and operations officer for the home station element of the brigade during its deployment in support of Operation Inherent Resolve. He served as executive officer for the 7th Engineer Battalion from 2022 to 2024.
Anderson’s military awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (two oak leaf clusters), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal (one oak leaf cluster), Sapper Tab, Mountaineering Badge, Airborne Badge and Air Assault Badge.
He and his wife have three children.
