This event is designed to capitalize on the outcomes from the initial October 2006 multi-state water resources partnering session in Columbus, Ohio and to serve as a stepping stone, bringing together government, state, non-profit and private stakeholders to communicate and develop partnerships and a plan of action around our shared interest: a healthy Ohio River Basin and long-term Ohio River Basin sustainability. Agencies leading this year's summit are the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Ohio River Valley Sanitation Commission (ORSANCO), Ohio River Basin Water Resource Association (ORBWRA) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE).

Our shared objective is to facilitate communication on water resource issues within the Ohio River Basin, identify unmet needs, discuss common interests and concerns, and to develop an understanding of opportunities for collaboration and coordination on regional priorities and initiatives.  A series of overriding sustainability, restoration and protection themes have emerged through collaboration over the last several years.  These include water use and management, water quality, ecosystem protection and restoration, aging infrastructure, sustainable watershed development and elevating the profile of the Ohio River Basin.  The summit will be organized to facilitate discussion on these topics and those raised by the participants.  Targeted meeting participants include executive decision-makers (i.e. executive management, board/commission leaders, SES and cabinet-level executives and their equivalents.

The emphasis of this conference will be on dialogue with participants.  Moving the notion of "sustainability" from concept to application is not a spectator sport!  The conference will yield ideas and commitments to action, that will influence the continued development and implementation of goals and objectives and, in so doing, recognize the interrelationships between the environmental and socio-economic needs of this great region.
